Helpful Tips
Math:
Language Arts:
Note: Do what works for you and your child. If you are choosing the use the language arts Teacher Guide to help teach the lessons to your child, the following will be helpful information for you. If you are not using the Teacher Guide, it could still be useful information for you, but if you have found ways of teaching these lessons that works for you and your child please continue doing what works best for you.
A couple more things:

- During math I highly suggest you make some sort of manipulatives available to your child to help them solve math problems. Cheerios, legos, and beads are just some examples of helpful manipulative. (For example, 10-4=6, your child would start with 10 beads, take away 4, and see that there are 6 beads left.) Research shows that having something tangible to practice with (such as manipulatives) increases understanding.
- In math we often skip lessons in order to fit everything in during the school year. You will see this when I assign work each week. If you have extra time and would like to teach the lessons I skip, you are more than welcome to, however, it is not required. You are also welcome to use any worksheets that are not assigned. Please do not go ahead of the week I assigned because you never know which worksheets we will use, but you can have your child do some extra practice with worksheets we did not use.

- The language arts lessons often start with a warm up. These warm ups allow students to practice blending, which is a very important skill learned in Kindergarten.
- The language arts lessons often have a section called "Chaining" or "Chain and Copy". At school students would use little letter cards to create words. This was very beneficial and we saw a lot of academic growth once we integrated this strategy. That being said, I understand not everybody has letter cards at home and that's okay! If you do have letter cards at home, I find it helpful to use them during chaining because it allows students to spell out words using an unconventional method. If you do not have letter cards at home, I suggest you still do the chaining section on a white board or using paper and pencil. A white board would allow students to change one letter to create a new word which is a primary focus of the chaining process. However, I understand that many families probably don't have a white board. If you don't, that is complete okay, we are all working with what we have. A paper and pencil will be just fine for this task.
A couple more things:
- As of now, I will not be collecting student work. It will be your job to check for understanding and see that your child is answering correctly and writing the correct answers on their worksheets. If corrections need to be made (for example, if a letter or number is written backwards) show your child what needs fixing and allow them a chance to fix it right away to positively reinforce that skill.
- Every child is different. Some students may need less guidance with their school work and some may need a bit more help. That is okay. Every day at school we are doing our best to work with each child at his/her level. Learning at home will really allow students to get the one-on-one help that is sometimes required when learning new concepts.
- Should this school closure last longer than 2 weeks, I will provide even more online resources and create an online learning community using videos and pictures so students and I can communicate with each other and interact from home in attempt to recreate our classroom community.
